Similar in appearance to Mourning Dove with a shorter, more rounded tail and darker brown overall coloration. Adult male: rich brown head with dark iris and blue orbital ring, black crescent bordering lower edge of auriculars and a black bill. Rich brown neck with purplish patch of iridescence on side of neck. Warm brown back and wings with black spots on wings, black primaries and outer secondaries edged in white. White inner trailing edge in flight appears like a white bar on outer secondaries when perched. Pale brownish or grayish-white underparts. Brown tail. Red legs. Adult female: paler than male, with much less extensive iridescence. Juvenile: paler than adult, with pale buffy edges of feathers in scapulars and wing coverts and no iridescence.

Habitat:

Usually found in open woodlands.

Behavior:

Forages on ground. Occasionally swallows gravel to help digestive system. May lick salt.

Feeding:

Diet consists of seed, grain and occasionally insects.
