Adult males and females are similar, with both showing a distinctive head pattern; extensive bright yellow on the throat and upper breast, crisp white supercilium, distinctive black T-shaped pattern on face extends down onto the upper flanks where it borders the yellow throat, a large white neck spot, and a white arc below the eye. Crown, nape, back, and wings are all blueish-gray wings with two conspicuous white wing bars. Lower breast and belly are white with heavy black to charcoal-gray streaks along the flanks. Females are slightly paler above and show a yellowish wash on the lower flanks and vent. Southeastern birds have yellow supraloral spot and white supercilium; more northerly birds have pure white supercilium. Grace's Warbler of montane Southwest lacks white on face and black T-shaped pattern on head.

Habitat:

Riparian areas, damp woods, pine and deciduous forests, wooded swamps. Uses a variety of forest types during migration and winter.

Behavior:

Often creeps along large branches or treetrunks. Nest is a cup on tree branch, often concealed among Spanish moss. During migration and winter, sometimes joins flocks with other warblers.

Feeding:

Gleans foliage or tree bark for a variety of insects and other invertebrates.
