
This large grosbeak is recognized by its massive dark gray bill and bold color pattern. Male: Bright yellow overall, including the underwing coverts, with limited fine black streaking on the back. Wings are black with two white wing bars, white tips on the tertials, and a white patch at the base of the primaries. The tail is black with white on the outer tail feathers and white spots on the uppertail coverts. The undertail coverts are white. Female: Similar to male, but with dusky streaking on upperparts, dark auriculars, and a smaller white patch on the primaries. The wings and tail have a brownish cast. Juveniles resemble adult female. Young males have more yellow on the head than females.
