
Similar to the Gray-headed subspecies of Dark-eyed Junco, this species is pale gray overall, with a rufous back and rufous edging on the wing coverts and tertials. The pale gray upper breast and sides fade to whitish on the belly. The lores are blackish, highlighting the pale yellow eye. The upper mandible is dusky, the lower mandible pale yellow. The white outer tail feathers are obvious in flight.

Song is series of three or four slurred notes, followed by a dry trill and a final tyew.
