
This rare Mexican species closely resembles Field Sparrow, but with a shorter, squared tail and dark legs. The face and underparts are gray, paler on the throat and vent areas, without any of the buffy tones found on Field Sparrow. The rusty cap begins at the mid-crown, and does not extend over the gray forehead. Note the white eye ring and pink bill. Upperparts are buffy brown with dark streaks. Juveniles are browner overall with dusky streaks on breast and flanks.

Males sing from a low perch in the morning. Forms mixed flocks in winter.
