Low pitched, eerie haaaao-ooooooo that suggests the sound made by blowing across the opening of an empty bottle.
Riparian areas, woodlands, forest edges and clearings/fields.
Somewhat secretive. Though this species often perches high in trees, it is most often seen foraging on the ground or visiting feeders. Can be aggressive. Usually seen solitary or in pairs.
Diet consists of seeds and grain, fruit/berries and insects.
Due to its plump shape and comparatively short (for a dove) tail, this species often appears quail-like on the ground. Also, it habitually flicks its tail upward quickly (like a grouse) and then lets it drop down slowly.
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this occasionally, confident.
