
In all plumages, this species displays a bold white stripe behind the eye. The bill is fairly short and straight. The head is rounded and the tail is square. Male: Dark green overall. Head usually appears dark, but flashes purple in proper light. The bill is red with a black tip. Female: Underparts are white with coarse green spots. Lower mandible is reddish at the base. Juvenile Male: Like adult female, but with scattered blue and green on throat, and red on both mandibles. Juvenile Female: Like adult female, but with fewer and more bronze-colored spots on throat.
