
A small, yellow-eyed owl with ear tufts, restricted to Southeast Arizona. Adult is gray-brown overall with thick black streaks crossed by heavy horizontal bars underneath, subtly patterned wings, gray face with black border, and dark bill. No red morph in North America. Sexes are similar. Eastern Screech-Owl has paler bill and weaker bars on belly; Western Screech-Owl is also less heavily barred below. Note range and voice when identifying screech-owls.

Habitat:
Oak and mixed woodlands.
Behavior:
Nocturnal. Roosts by day in cavity. Nest is in tree cavity.
Feeding:
Hunts from stationary perch, gleaning foliage or pouncing on ground. Eats mostly insects.
