
Small and dark, with three white plumes on each side of head and a thin forward-curling crest, stubby orange bill, and pale eye. In winter, plumes are less apparent and bill is grayer; juvenile lacks plumes or crest and has black bill. Whiskered is most similar to Crested Auklet; note head pattern and pale undertail coverts on Whiskered.

Breeds colonially; nests in crevices.
