
This little warbler is distinguished in all plumages by its overall gray color, yellow undertail coverts, greenish-yellow rump, and white eye ring. Adult males show a patch of yellow across the breast. The crown has a dark rufous patch, which is often concealed. Adult females have less extensive yellow on the breast. The rufous crown patch is small or lacking. Juveniles are nearly identical to adult females, but show little if any yellow on the breast.

Voice:
Song is a rather lazy series of warbles: chwee chwee chwee chwee ti-ti-ti-ti. Call is a metallic chink.
Habitat:
Pinyon-juniper woodlands, oak woodlands with shrubby chapparal-like understory.
Behavior:
Often found in mixed flocks with other warblers away from the breeding season.
Feeding:
Gleans and flycatches insects.
