This flycatcher is very similar in appearance to Sulphur-Bellied Flycatcher, but is smaller overall, with a more crisply patterned face and a much smaller bill. The mostly dark bill is pale orange on the base of the lower mandible. Long tail. Adult: head has pied pattern with near solid dark crown, broad white supercilium, dark mask through the eye that flairs a bit behind the eye, and broad whitish stripe below mask. A smudgy dusky brown malar stripe frames the dingy whitish throat. The upper breast is dingy white like the throat and gradually transitions to yellowish on belly and undertail coverts. Indistinct streaks and mottling on throat. Smudgy brownish streaking on breast, flanks and upper belly. Dark brown back with pale feather edges creating buffy streaks, dusky brown wings with two inconspicuous white wingbars and crisp white edging to the outer webs of the secondaries and tertials. Tail is mostly blackish with broad rusty edges to the upper tail coverts and outer tail feathers. From the side the tail looks mostly rusty. Dark legs. Juvenile: similar to adult, but paler. Rufous edging to secondaries.

Forests, woodlands, forest edges and open or semi-open areas with scattered trees and shrubs.

Behavior:

Flycatches from mid-level perches often swooping downward to catch insects.

Feeding:

Diet consists of insects and occasionally small fruits.
