
In all plumages, this bunting can be distinguished by its short primary projection and thin decurved upper mandible. Alternate Male: Dark metallic blue overall, with a red nape and a reddish-purple cast over the back and underparts. At close range, note the partial red eye ring and black on the face. Basic Male: Brown feather edges obscure much of the breeding color, but blue of crown and rump usually obvious. Female: Uniform dull gray-brown overall, with just a hint of blue in the wing and tail feathers. Males in their first spring resemble females, but may show individual colored feathers.

Voice:
Song is a series of whistled phrases, similar to song of Painted Bunting, but slightly choppier. Call is a loud chip.
Habitat:
Thickets of desert scrub, riparian corridors.
Behavior:
Often hard to see in heavy cover, but males will sing from exposed perches.
Feeding:
Forages on the ground and in low vegetation for insects, seeds, fruit.
