This species was formerly lumped with Taiga Bean-Goose. Both species are grayish-brown overall, with a white belly and undertail coverts. The wing coverts and flight feathers have pale edges, creating a broad scaly effect. A white line separates the folded wings from the flanks, which have dark barring. Tundra Bean-Goose averages smaller, with a shorter neck than that of Taiga Bean-Goose, but there is overlap among some races. The bill is dark with a narrow orange subterminal band. Legs and feet are bright orange. In flight, the white rump separates the brown back from the brown tail.
