This bird gets its name from its massive bill. The upperparts are a uniform dusky brownish-gray, slightly darker on the peaked crown and around the eyes. The tail is squared or slightly notched. The throat is white, and the breast pale gray. The belly and undertail coverts are pale yellow in fresh autumn plumage, fading to whitish-yellow by spring. Juveniles have rufous feather edges on the wings, more intense yellow on underparts, and a paler back, which creates more contrast with the dark head.
