
This medium-sized, brownish Old World flycatcher has a distinctive black tail with white at the base to outer tail feathers. White tips of greater wing coverts. Alternate Adult male: Brown upperparts, gray-brown face, and gray breast; reddish-orange throat. Whitish underparts with buff-washed sides and flanks. Small, dark bill and dark eye with thin pale eyering. Female and Basic male: Similar to Alternate Male, but with browner face and white throat. Formerly considered con-specific with Red-breasted Flycatcher. Red-breasted has a pale lower mandible and browner tail than Taiga. Also, male Red-breasted has red extending onto the breast and darker, grayer cheeks than Taiga.

Habitat:
Found near water in mature coniferous or deciduous forests.
Behavior:
Nests in holes in trees. Flycatches, gleans caterpillars from oak leaves, or drops to the ground to capture prey. Rapidly flicks tail upward.
Feeding:
Feeds on flying insects, caterpillars, and berries.
