Field Notes

Steller's Jay is a common resident in my yard in Sherwood, OR and usually easy to note for a day list within an hour outside. However, in the early summer they become very secretive as they become predators of nests and young birds - vocalizations are much rarer and I usually find one when I hear the commotion of a junco or robin protecting young from an aggressive jay. In early August they are once again easy to find as they are hording filbert nuts and are flying regularly with beaks full hiding the large white objects in secret caches.
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this regularly, highly confident.
