
Slightly larger than Wilson's Snipe, this Asian stray typically shows a paler face, a distinctive warm ginger-brown wash across the upper breast, and the dark barring on the underparts is finer and more extensive, thus limiting the clean white area on the belly. Strays to western Alaska are believed to be of the subspecies "japonica."

Habitat:
Breeds in montane areas above the timberline, winters at lower elevations usually along streams.
