
A medium-sized flycatcher with bright yellow underparts and a bold black and white head pattern. Olive-brown upperparts with darker wings. Grayish-black head with white throat and a long broad white supercilum that runs from the forehead to the nape. Concealed reddish-orange patch on crown; visible only when crown feathers are raised. Heavy dark bill is comparatively short. Bright lemon-yellow underparts. Juvenile lacks crown patch and has orange-brown edges of wings and tail. Black areas on head of adult replaced by grayish in younger birds. Smaller and smaller-billed than Great Kiskadee.

Habitat:
Found in open woodlands, forest edges, small clearings, second-growth, riparian areas, and gardens and parks in urban areas.
Behavior:
Often forms small groups. Perches on vegetation and flycatches; occasionally swoops down to water and snatches tadpoles near the surface.
Feeding:
Mostly feeds on insects, berries, fruits, and seeds.
