This species is very similar to Groove-billed Ani. The presence or lack of grooves on the bill are not reliable field marks for separating the two. Differences in vocalizations and the shape of the lower mandible are far more reliable. Shiny black overall, with a long floppy tail, thick bill, and bare skin around the eye. The plumage often looks shaggy and disheveled. Pale bluish feather edges create a scaly pattern on the upperparts and breast. On some individuals, a high bulging culmen is distinctive. The lower mandible shows a sharp gonydeal angle (the lower mandible on Groove-billed is straight). Juveniles are similar, but have a brownish cast to the feathers and a smaller bill.

Behavior:

Flight consists of quick beats followed by gliding. Flies in single-file lines.

Feeding:

Forages on or near the ground for insects. Also takes small reptiles, amphibians, and fruit.
