
The species gets its name from its rusty-orange back and wing coverts, which contrast with the gray head, rump, and tail. The white throat has black streaks which extend onto the upper breast. The lower breast and sides are rusty-orange, as are the underwing coverts, visible in flight. The lower belly and undertail coverts are white. The bill is yellow-orange, and the legs are orange-pink.
