Adult is gray and buffy overall, with gray wings finely spotted with white, buffy belly, white undertail coverts with black bars, thin gray streaks on breast, gray tail with fine dark bars and buffy tail corners, pale supercilium, dark gray face and crown, and relatively long, slender bill. Canyon Wren is more rufous overall with white throat.

Voice:

Ringing, echoing, repeated phrases, often with trilled and piercing notes. Call is short trill.

Habitat:

Rockfalls, cliffs, rimrock, quarries, cutbanks, talus, rocky mountaintops.

Behavior:

Hops and crawls among rocks, often bobbing in place. Males sing from exposed rocky perches. Nest is placed in rocky crevice, lined inside with fine vegetation and outside with small pebbles.

Feeding:

Forages among rocks; eats insects and other small prey.
