A relatively large, bulky auklet with thick neck, stocky head, and heavy orange bill. Breeding adults have a namesake "horn" projecting up from base of bill. Mostly dark gray; in alternate plumage, two conspicuous white plumes run across the face. White on belly visible in flight. Young birds and winter adults are all dark above the water line except for white undertail. Immatures have a smaller dark bill, while basic-plumaged adults show a dull yellow bill. In flight, their wings appear set back farther on the body and they show more head and neck extension in front of the wing than other auklets and puffins.
Length: 38 (cm) Wingspan: 56 (cm)
Voice:
Series of low vocalizations near nest site; silent at sea.
Habitat:
Open ocean and coastal waters.
Behavior:
Usually seen alone, in pairs, or small scattered groups close to shore; nests in burrows. Extends wings as it dives.
Feeding:
Dives and swims to catch fish.
Field Notes
Contrary to what is stated in a popular field guide, Rhinoceros Auklets do not fly with their heads raised.
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this regularly, highly confident.
