Medium-sized shorebird with a very plump body and comparatively small head, relatively thick bill and neck, short legs and long wings. Alternate female: very crisp plumage. Continuous black crown, loral area and chin with white face. Yellow bill with tiny black tip, bright rufous neck and underparts, narrow stripe of black extending from crown down hind neck to back. Black back and wings with buffy or white streaks, gray legs. Alternate male: similar to female, except drabber and much paler. Basic Adult: black patch behind eye. Dark bill with pale base to lower mandible, white head and forehead with partial black cap on back of head and thin black stripe extending from cap down hind neck to back. Unstreaked light gray back and wings, white neck and underparts. Juvenile: Black crown, back, and wing feathers edged in buff creating a slightly streaked crown and scaly-looking back and wings, buffy wash on neck, breast and upper flanks. In fall, transitioning (juvenile to basic plumage) hatch-year birds are easily confused with similar juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes. Note the more slender shape and longer, thinner bill of Red-necked and its more obvious back streaks.
