Alternate female: dark gray to black (auriculars) head and chin with white spot above eye and white throat, extensive reddish on sides and front of neck, gray back and wings with two broad buffy stripes on wings, gray breast and mottled gray flanks, and white belly. Basic Adult: black patch behind eye, white head and forehead with partial black cap on back of head and narrow dark stripe from cap down hind neck to back. Gray back and wings streaked with white. Field Notes
I once watched several among a group of fall migrant Red-necked Phalaropes at a coastal wetland repeatedly use what amounted to an ephemeral tool. Shore flies, which stand atop the water using surface tension, were thick. To hunt them, a phalarope would swim toward a fly, increasing its swimming speed, and thereby pushing ahead a distinct bow wave. The bird would flatten its neck, head, and bill, hiding quite effectively behind the wave, and then lunge over the wave to snap up an unsuspecting fly. I watched this happen again and again and the inescapable conclusion was that the birds were employing a moving hide. This may well be a widespread and possibly ancient behavior, but I had never seen it or read about it. Anyone else?
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this occasionally, confident.
