Along with Red-breasted and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, this species is part of a complex of three closely related species. Red-naped Sapsucker is found in the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin regions. Upperparts are largely black, with rows of white barring running down each side of the back, white barring on the flight feathers, and a long white bar on the folded wing. The crown is red with a black border. A red patch is usually present on the nape of both sexes, but is occasionally missing on females. Bold white lines border the black eye line. Males show a red chin and throat that lacks the complete black border seen on Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Females have a white chin and red throat. A black bib covers the upper breast. The lower breast and belly are whitish with a yellow wash. Dusky streaks run along the sides and flanks. Juveniles are more brownish overall, and lack the black and white pattern on the head and breast. Adult-like head pattern is obtained by autumn.
