A stocky, drab vireo with a bold eye ring and crisp white wingbars. Adult is cold grayish overall with white eye ring and supraloral stripe, short thick bill, whitish throat and underparts, white undertail coverts. May show a faint yellow wash on the vent. Wings are gray with two narrow white wing bars, folded secondaries have gray edges. Tail is relatively short. Sexes are similar. In some light conditions, dull Cassin's may be confused with this species, but they always show some green on the back, yellowish or greenish-yellow wash on the flanks, and greenish edges to the folded secondaries. Cassin's, Blue-headed, and Plumbeous vireos were formerly treated as conspecific under the name Solitary Vireo. Gray and Bell's vireos lack bold white spectacle pattern.

Husky and scratchy phrases, each with two or three notes, separated by short pauses. Also harsh scolding calls.
Open pine and mixed forests. During migration, occurs in a variety of wooded habitats.
Forages at all levels of canopy. Nest is a fine cup suspended from forked tree branch. During migration, sometimes joins flocks of other warblers and vireos.
Gleans foliage for insects and other invertebrates, and occasional fruit.
