
This species is distinguished from the similar Variegated Flycatcher by the Piratic's smaller size and shorter all-black bill. Adult: Dull olive-brown upperparts with pale edges on the wing coverts, tertials, and tail feathers. The bold face pattern includes a dark crown (with a usually concealed yellow central patch), white supercilia extend around to meet at the back of the head, a broad dark mask, white submoustachial area, and a thin dark malar stripe. The underparts are white at the throat, darkening to yellow on the lower belly. The breast and sides are marked with blurry brownish streaks. Juvenile: Similar to adult, but lacks yellow crown patch, and has rusty edges on wing feathers and uppertail coverts.
