A small, stocky plover with pale orange legs and a stubby, orange bill with black tip. Upperparts, crown and face are very pale sandy brown. Eyebrow, throat, collar, and underparts are clean white. White forehead with black upper border. Thin, dark breast band wraps around neck. Basic Adults and juveniles have gray breast band, lack black above forehead, and have all black bills. In flight, wings are whitish below and pale above with dark outer-wings and a broad, white stripe; tail white with dark tip.

Voice:

Call is a clear, whistled che-woo. Also makes a repeated phep, phep, phep. Display call is a series of puweet notes.

Habitat:

Found along sandy beaches, sandbars, or alkali flats; nests on the ground.

Behavior:

Noisy, but blends in with beach quite well. Very aggressive near nest sites. Feeds by spotting prey, running to it, pausing to eat it, and then repeating the process.

Feeding:

Feeds on insects and other small invertebrates.
