Almost entirely black during the breeding season with a large white wing patch, bright red feet, and a slender black bill. In winter, they are entirely white below, with black and gray mottling on the crown, nape, and back. Dark wings with the white patch are retained throughout the year. In alternate plumage, the black bar jutting into the white wing patch separates this species from very similar Black Guillemot. Shows a gray wing lining in flight in all plumages, while Black Guillemots show white wing linings. In basic plumage, the dark mottling above separates this species from the mostly white Black Guillemot. Juveniles and basic-plumaged adults can be told from young Common Murres by the white wing patch and much thinner bill.
