At first glance, this unique bird might suggest a jay, but its combination of small size, slender profile, long tail, spiky wispy crest, red eye, and very short thin bill readily distinguish it from all other North American birds. Adult males all glossy black; females dark gray with white edging on wing feathers. In flight, note the somewhat short, very rounded wings; females appear all gray, while males look mostly black with extensive white on both the upper and undersides of the primaries. Juvenile similar to female.

Voice:

Call a low, rising whistle. Song a series of liquid rising and falling notes, broken and gargled.

Habitat:

Found in brushy areas in deserts, often near or in mistletoe.

Behavior:

May form large flocks where food is available. Will fly overhead or from perches to capture insects. Flight is direct and fluttery.

Feeding:

Feeds on fruits (especially mistletoe berries) or insects.
