Adult male is colorful and unmistakable, with blue head, green wings, and red underparts, throat, rump, and eye ring. Female is green overall, brighter on upperparts, with relatively thick conical bill. Juveniles are similar to adult female, but drabber green; other juvenile buntings are brownish overall.

Musical warbled phrases; call is a slightly rising, burry note.

Habitat:

Brushy fields, overgrown clearcuts, thickets, woodland edges, suburbs.

Behavior:

Usually in low brush or on the ground, alone, in pairs, or small groups. Nest is a cup of fine vegetation in low shrub or tree.

Feeding:

Gleans foliage and ground for insects and seeds. Sometimes visits bird feeders.
