Large, plump, distinctive dove. Red eye. Small dark bill. Adult: Brownish-gray head with pale gray crown. Brownish-gray neck with conspicuous patch of black and white barring on the sides of the neck. Grayish-brown underparts blend with gray undertail coverts. Grayish-brown back. Upperparts darker, broad rufous fringes to scapulars, wing coverts and tertials create a scaly look. Grayish on secondaries. Dark primaries edged in pale gray. Gray rump and tail with paler gray tail tip. Red legs. Female is similar to male but slightly paler. Juvenile paler than adult. Narrower rufous fringes to wing coverts and tertials. Unmarked neck.

Habitat:

Open woodlands, forest edges and open habitats with patches of shrubs or scattered trees.

Behavior:

Birds in northern part of range are highly migratory. Usually forages on the ground.

Feeding:

Diet consists of seeds, berries and various greens including bamboo shoots.
