
Small, stocky finch with a short, notched tail and stubby, pinkish bill. Yellow patch on primaries distinctive. Adult male: Olive-brown with a grayish cap. Black lores. Dark wings with white-edged feathers and large yellow patch a the base of the primaries. Adult female: Similar to male but with lighter brown and brown crown. Juvenile has fine dark streaking on underparts. In flight, has dark wings with a broad, yellow stripe on the primaries, olive-gray rump, and a dark tail with yellow base to outer tail feathers.

Habitat:
Found in residential areas, cultivated fields, grasslands, and open woodlands.
Behavior:
Forms small flocks. Feeds in trees, shrubs or on the ground. Flight is swift and undulating with rapid wingbeats.
