This is a bulky anvil-headed flycatcher with a peaked crown and relatively short tail. Upperparts are dark olive-gray. Underparts are whitish, with dark olive-gray streaks on the sides of the breast, sides, and flanks, creating a dark "vest." The bill is black with a dull orange base on the lower mandible. When the wings are relaxed, two white fluffy patches are sometimes visible at the sides of the rump. Juvenile is similar to adult, but browner overall with buffy feather edges on the wings.

Coniferous forests with edge habitat and tall snags for perching.

Behavior:

Nesting territories are usually quite large and separated from the territories of other Olive-sided Flycatchers.

Feeding:

Flycatches from an exposed perch, usually at the very top of a dead tree.
