
Medium-sized flycatcher with brown upperparts and a yellow belly. Orange mouth lining distinctive. Adult: Olive-brown head and relatively small, dark bill. Pale gray throat and breast; bright yellow belly and undertail coverts. Olive-brown back with darker wings and short wingtips. White-fringed wing feathers with two white wingbars. Upper-tail is mostly brown; under-tail has rust extending to the tip of the central rectrices but not to the tip of the outer rectrices. Juveniles are similar to Ash-throated Flycatcher. Brown-crested and Great Crested Flycatchers are larger and larger-billed than Nutting's Flycatcher with more extensive rufous under the tail. Ash-throated is slightly larger and paler below with grayer auriculars and nape and with all dark-tipped rectrices.

Habitat:
Found in middle to low-elevation deciduous woodlands and scrubby second growth.
Behavior:
Catches insects by sallying out from a perch or occasionally hawking them midair.
