This species of dabbling duck is instantly recognized by its unusually long and wide spatulate bill. Male: In alternate plumage, shows a green iridescent head with dark bill and yellow eye. The breast and lower flanks are white, the sides and belly are a rich chestnut. Rump and undertail areas are black. In flight, a large powder blue patch on the forewing is trailed by a white line in front of the green speculum, a nearly identical pattern to that of Blue-winged and Cinnamon Teals. In Summer and early Fall adult males assume a cryptic female-like appearance, but with darker heads and yellow eyes. Female: Gray-brown overall (dark gray-brown feathers with buffy edges), with less patterning on the head and neck. The eye is brown or yellowish brown. The bill is usually dark with orange edges. In flight, presents a proportionally short-tailed, long-necked, and heavy-headed look. Wing pattern is similar to that of the male, but with a slightly lighter blue wing patch.
