19 So far, this NORTHERN FLICKER has been the only taker on our new suet feeder. Even the Chickadees won't touch it.

24 I have had several Yellow-shafted Flickers in Tillamook the last few years, and have seen others in the area also. Very slight "V" on this one's head.
25 While watching 2 female "Yellow-shafted" Flickers and a male "Red-shafted" Flicker, this intergrade guy flew in. It had red under wing linings. Tillamook, Or 1/31/13

35 Note the combination of a red malar stripe and red on the nape on this adult male Northern Flicker. This combination of markings is indicative of a bird with hybrid (Yellow-shafted X Red-shafted) parentage.
36 Here's a close-up of the head on the same intergrade male Northern Flicker shown in the previous image. Note the red malar and red on the nape. A pure male Red-shafted would have the red on the nape and a black malar stripe.
37 This juvenile Northern (Red-shafted) Flicker was part of a family group at Koll Wetlands on 20 July 2013. Note the lack of pattern in the face and how fresh and un-worn the feathers are. By the end of the nesting season, the feathers of adult woodpeckers are heavily abraded from all the trips in and out of the nest hole.
