Large, brownish Old Word Warbler with an overall appearance suggestive of a wren. Very chunky with a broad, graduated, white-tipped tail and fairly long pointed bill that is dark above and pale tan to yellowish on the lower mandible, reddish-pink legs and feet. Alternate Adult: Rusty brown upperparts with indistinct black streaks on back, underparts mostly white, with brownish wash on the sides of the upper breast and lower flanks, faint brownish streaks on sides of breast. Face marked by a white supercilium, a dark eyeline, and fine brown streaking that forms a weak auricular patch. Basic Adult: Similar to Alternate Adult, but more colorful below, with tawny yellowish underparts and a buffy yellowish supercilium. Juvenile: Similar to Basic Adult, with duller underparts and medium-dark streaking on upper breast.

Habitat:

Breeds in dwarf bamboo thickets, wet grasslands, or other damp areas with scattered bushes. Inhabits freshwater marshes and areas with tall grass, weeds or reeds at other times of year.

Behavior:

Elusive and skulking, rarely leaving ground except when singing from grasses or small bushes. Runs along ground with tail out.

Feeding:

Feeds on insects, berries, spiders, and small mollusks.
