
Similar to Yellow-billed Cuckoo; occupies mangroves of Southern Florida. Adult has plain dark brown upperparts, clean buffy underparts, long tail with white spots on black underside, black face mask, and thick, slightly decurved bill, with yellow lower mandible and black upper mandible. Yellow-billed Cuckoo has rufous primaries and lacks buffy wash on underparts; Black-billed Cuckoo has much smaller white tail spots.

Voice:
Nasal, harsh calls, in an accelerating series, with final notes drawn out slightly.
Habitat:
Mangrove swamps.
Behavior:
Typically alone or in pairs, among mangrove foliage. Nest is a platform of twigs in a forked tree branch, often in a mangrove tree, several feet above ground.
Feeding:
Gleans vegetation for a wide variety of insects and similar small prey.
