
This odd-looking long-legged, long-necked wader resembles a giant upright rail. It has a long heavy bill which it uses to feed almost exclusively on apple snails. The plumage is dark brown overall, lighter on the face and throat, with a light bronze cast on the wings and tail. The neck is extensively streaked with white. The back and wing coverts have large triangular spots. The bill is yellow with a dark culmen and tip. The legs are blackish. Juveniles have narrower spots, creating a more streaked appearance.

Freshwater marshes, lakes, riparian woods.

Flies with quick upstroke, similar to cranes.
