Unique in both coloration and behavior, Lewis’s Woodpecker is not likely to be confused with any other species. A bit larger than most woodpeckers, its upperparts are solid blackish with a green sheen. A pale gray collar encircles the neck and upper breast. The belly is salmon pink and the face is a deep red.

Voice:

Generally quiet. Calls include a rough chrrrrup and a thin chattering yilp, yilp, yilp.

Habitat:

Open pine forest, burned forest, oak woodland, riparian woods, orchards, agricultural areas.

Behavior:

Flight is crow-like, with smooth even wingbeats and short glides.

Feeding:

Flycatches and gleans insects in summer. Diet switches to acorns and other nuts in winter. Nuts are stored in crevices in tree bark and utility poles.
