This species (pronounced as both lah-ZU-lee and LAZH-oo-lie) is closely related to Indigo Bunting, and sometimes hybridizes with that species. Alternate Male: Bright iridescent blue head and upperparts, with two white wing bars. Upper wing bar is broader than lower. The breast shows a band of rusty-orange, which extends down the sides. The belly and undertail coverts are white. Basic Male: Similar to alternate male, but brown feather edges obscure much of the blue on the head and back. Alternate Female: Upperparts pale gray-brown with two narrow whitish wing bars, and a hint of blue on the rump, tail, and primary edges. The throat is pale gray. The breast is unmarked pale buff, fading to whitish on the belly. Basic Female: Like breeding female, but warmer overall, with two buffy wing bars and a buffy-orange breast.
Length: 13 (cm) Wingspan: 20 (cm)
Voice:
Song is a series of high warbles, often paired. Each adult male has his own unique song. First-summer males copy parts of other male's songs to create their own.
Habitat:
A variety of brushy habitats.
Behavior:
Males often remain motionless as they sing from slightly obscured perches near the tops of medium-sized trees, making them surprisingly tough to see. Loud song usually sounds a lot closer than the bird is.
Feeding:
Eats seeds, fruits, and insects. Frequents bird feeders.
