
Very similar to more widespread Marbled Murrelet, but Kittlitz's has a shorter bill, golden-brown rather than dark chocolate brown overall markings, and white undertail coverts in alternate plumage. In basic plumage, note the whiter face with white extending above the eye on Kittlitz's. Long-billed Murrelet, rare from Siberia, is even darker than Marbled with a longer bill.

Habitat:
Open ocean and coastal waters.
Behavior:
Usually in pairs or small scattered groups. Nests on the ground in rocky areas. Extends wings as it dives, "flies" underwater to feed.
Feeding:
Usually near shore, dives and swims to catch fish.
