
Head, wings and long tail are blue. Face features a blackish mask and cheeks, and a narrow, broken white eyeline. Back is dark gray-brown. Underparts grayish to nearly white. Blue necklace separating grayish, lightly streaked throat. Under tail coverts washed blue. Larger and has a much longer, heavier bill than very similar Western Scrub-Jay. Also shows darker black cheeks, and a darker brown back.

Habitat:
Usually scrub oak or chaparral.
Behavior:
Actively defends territories throughout year. Non-breeders are found in loose flocks. Caches acorns.
Feeding:
Diet consists of lizards, mice, fruits and seeds (especially acorns).
