This species is closely related to Lazuli Bunting. Alternate Male: Dark iridescent blue overall, darker on the head. The lores and wings are blackish. The bill is gray. First alternate males usually blotched blue and brown. Basic Male: Brown feather edges obscure most of the blue. Brownish belly fades to white on the undertail coverts. Alternate Female: Warm gray-brown overall with a whitish throat and thin blurry streaks on the breast. Wings and tail show a hint of blue. Pale brown belly fades to white on undertail coverts. Basic Female: Similar to alternate female but with warmer cinnamon brown on upperparts and breast. Immatures similar to basic females.
