This is a small dove with a long squared tail. In flight, note the white outer tail feathers and the rufous primaries. Adults are pale gray-brown overall. Dark bars near the ends of the contour feathers produce a scaly pattern. This scaly pattern is less obvious on juveniles. The face is paler gray. Males may show a pinkish wash on the breast. At close range, note the blue eye ring and reddish iris. Feet are reddish.

Call is a hoarse poo-POOO, often repeated.

Habitat:

urban parks, lawns, dry open habitats.

Behavior:

Feeds on the ground. Often fairly tame. Territorial males will charge an intruder with one wing held aloft.

Feeding:

Diet consists of seeds and grain. This species is a frequent visitor to bird feeders.
