Winter adult male Hooded Oriole at Salineno, Texas on 31 January 2012. The North American Birds Online account assigns the Texas birds to the "Cucullatus Group" of subspecies and describes them as being shorter-winged and deeper orange than the subspecies one encounters in California.

Having seen a number of winter Hooded Orioles over the years, I was struck by this bird. It seemed to be paler below and have less orange in the plumage than other Dec-Feb "adult" males that I've seen in Oregon, Texas, and Baja California Sur. This bird is wintering in North Bend, Coos County, Oregon, here on 8 February 2015.

Here's another shot of the adult male Hooded Oriole wintering at North Bend, Oregon. It's paler appearance gave me cause to wonder if it might be a second-year male.
