
Long-tailed compared to other orioles, with a long, decurved bill. Adult male is flaming orange with black wings, tail, back, face, and throat; wing coverts form a white patch on the shoulder. Young males are pale yellow instead of orange. Females are dull yellow with gray wings and tail, lack black on the head, and have drab wingbars. Tail is more rounded than most other orioles.

Voice:
Series of whistles in quick succession, interspersed with chattering and harsh notes. Call an unassuming "wheet."
Habitat:
Open woodlands, scrub, suburbs, urban parks. Often near palms.
Behavior:
Nest is a pouch suspended from tree branch or palm leaf. Common in suburban areas with ornamental plantings.
Feeding:
Forages at all levels, even near the ground, often in dense vegetation. Eats insects, fruit, and nectar. Sometimes visits sugar water feeders.
