This Asian species has been established only in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. This large grouse is short-legged and short-tailed and very plump. Plumage is gray-brown overall with rusty streaks on the upperparts. The face and throat are whitish, highlighted by two chestnut stipes that frame the auriculars and run down the side of the neck. The pale gray breast is speckled dark chestnut. The legs are yellow-orange. The undertail coverts are white, as are much of the primaries, visible in flight. Juveniles are paler overall.

Habitat:

Alpine and subalpine meadow.

Behavior:

Flies downhill in the morning, then forages uphill during the day.

Feeding:

Feeds on grasses, forbs, fruit, and tubers. Occasionally takes insects.
