
This extremely large hummingbird is dark green overall with a slightly decurved bill. Sexes similar. Violet patches on auriculars, chin, and breast. Undertail coverts washed with buff. The tail is dark blue-green with a dusky subterminal band. Juveniles are paler, with less violet.

In Mexico, inhabits pine-oak woodlands. Vagrants to U.S. most likely to be found at feeders.
